Contemporary Work

Paintings exploring the relationship between structure, light, material, and space.

Carved Planes

48" x 48"

Acrylic on canvas with modeling paste

Carved Planes explores how overlapping planes create depth through subtle shifts in proportion, material, and light. Inspired in part by the layered spaces of Rem Koolhaas’s Seattle Central Library, the painting uses simple geometry to suggest architecture without depicting it.

Veiled Presence

Measures 25" x 32" x 1.25"

Laser-cut and assembled woodacrylic and modeling paste

Constructed from individually laser-cut planes, Veiled Presence explores the relationship between structure and language. Layer by layer, the composition creates depth, allowing light to reveal the abstract Square Kufic form of the word Allah across the surface.

Entrusted

48" x 60"

Metallic acrylic and modeling paste on canvas

Diagonal lines extend beyond the canvas, allowing the composition to continue beyond its physical boundaries. The geometry forms an abstract Square Kufic rendering of the phrase Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakeel (“Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs”), exploring trust through movement, direction, and the continuation of form beyond the visible frame.

The metallic surface responds to changing light, revealing shifts in texture, tone, and brushwork throughout the day.

Beneath the Surface

36" x 36"

Acrylic and modeling paste on canvas

Built through successive layers of acrylic and modeling paste, this composition emerged through a process of adding, concealing, and revealing. A textured blue ground anchors the painting, while lighter planes introduce depth through accumulation rather than perspective.

An early exploration of geometry, material, and layered space, the work contains ideas that would later evolve into a more architectural visual language.

Shifting Light

48" x 48"

Metallic acrylic paint on canvas

Layers of metallic acrylic respond to changing light, revealing brushwork, concealed planes, and shifting depth. Copper, silver, bronze, pearl, and gold function as both color and material, giving the composition a changing presence as light and surroundings shift throughout the day.

Vertical Rhythm

48" x 60"

Acrylic and modeling paste on canvas

A study in restraint, this painting explores how vertical planes and subtle shifts in tone create depth and quiet movement. Soft layers of color overlap without competing for attention, allowing proportion, balance, and light to define the composition.

Rather than depicting architecture, the work reflects its underlying principles: structure, rhythm, and calm.

Emergence

36" x  36"

Metallic acrylic with modeling paste on canvas

An early exploration of Square Kufic, Emergence investigates how language can become structure rather than ornament. Vertical palette-knife strokes create an organic field of movement, while the geometric composition gradually reveals the word “Muhammad” (peace be upon him) through contrast rather than emphasis.

The form emerges slowly as the eye moves across the surface.

Origins

Where the language began

Early explorations in composition, material and process

Untitled - I

15" X 15"

Acrylic on wood panel

An early exploration of structure and gesture, this painting balances precise geometric forms against spontaneous marks. Successive layers reveal the history of the surface, bringing deliberate composition and expressive mark-making into dialogue.

Untitled - II

12" X 12"

Acrylic on wood panel

This study explores the relationship between layered paint and geometric form. By sanding through successive layers, the painting preserves earlier decisions beneath the final composition, allowing its process to remain visible.

Untitled - III

12" X 12"

Acrylic on canvas

An early exploration of compositional balance, this painting shifts from expressive mark-making towards the deliberate placement of planes. Its arrangement anticipates the architectural language developed in later works.

Untitled - IV

12" X 12"

Acrylic on canvas

This work explores layered mark-making and geometric structure. Dots, linear forms, and transparent planes combine with scraping and sanding to reveal earlier layers, allowing the painting to develop through accumulation rather than replacement.

 Transition

The bridge between early experimentation and the architectural language that defines the current collection

Threshold

The painting where the language changes

24" X 48"

Acrylic on canvas

Threshold marks the shift from experimentation towards intention. Ideas explored in the Origins studies—layering, transparency, subtraction, balance, and structure—come together in a more resolved composition, anticipating the architectural language of the works that follow.
