Kitchen Renovation

A kitchen designed around restraint, material continuity, and concealed function.

Concealed Function

The design began with a continuous working wall that conceals the everyday functions of the kitchen. Full-height oak panels establish a calm architectural backdrop, allowing individual appliances and storage to recede when not in use.

The island becomes the central element of the room, bringing together preparation, gathering, and material contrast. Oak, porcelain, and brushed metal were selected to work quietly together, while the veining of the stone introduces movement against the warmth of the wood.

Concealed Storage

The continuous oak wall conceals full-height storage, keeping day-to-day appliances out of sight.

When closed, the cabinetry reads less like conventional kitchen storage and more like an architectural wall.

This approach allows the room to shift between working kitchen and quiet living space, reducing visual clutter while maintaining everything needed for everyday use.

Material Selection

The quartzite slab was the starting point for the material palette, chosen for its durability and natural variation.

Material Relationships

Oak, quartzite, porcelain, and brushed metal were selected as a restrained palette, chosen for the way they relate through texture, proportion, and light.

The geometric pattern of the floor introduces another layer of rhythm, connecting the kitchen to the architectural language found throughout the home.

The Result

The finished kitchen is intentionally restrained. Materials, proportion, and light do the work rather than decoration.

Behind the continuous wall, function remains accessible; when concealed, the architecture of the room takes precedence.
